Welcome to the Computer Science and Technology Department!
The Department of Computer Science and Technology offers an innovative, forward-thinking curriculum designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. Students engage with current and emerging technologies, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning across multiple fields of technology.
Computer Science
The Computer Science program offers dynamic courses for grades 11 and 12, where students learn programming skills to create sophisticated applications and develop engaging games. Through both individual projects and group collaborations, students gain hands-on experience with industry-relevant programming languages and software development tools. The curriculum emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity, empowering students to design, code, and troubleshoot their own software solutions. Whether working independently or as part of a team, students gain practical skills that prepare them for higher education and careers in the ever-evolving field of computer science.
Technology
Starting with students entering high school in the 2024–25 school year, all students are required to earn a Grade 9 or 10 Technological Education credit, which is a compulsory graduation requirement for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. (Ontario Technology Curriculum)
In Grade 9, students begin their journey with TAS1O - Technology & the Skilled Trades, a foundational course that introduces them to the design process, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various technological fields. Through engaging projects and collaborative learning, students explore the fundamentals of design, engineering, and technological systems, providing a solid base for future studies.
In Grade 10, the department offers two specialized courses that allow students to dive deeper into the world of technology:
· Communications Technology: This course focuses on digital design and communication, where students gain proficiency in industry-standard Adobe software tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Students will develop skills in graphic design, and digital media production, learning to create visually compelling content for various digital and print platforms.
· Computer Technology: In this hands-on course, students explore the world of computer hardware and programming. They engage in projects that involve building electronic systems, programming microcontrollers, and designing interactive technology solutions. This course provides a thorough understanding of both the practical and theoretical aspects of computer systems.
In Grade 11, students can continue with Communications Technology and/or Computer Technology and also have the opportunity to expand their skill set further by taking Hospitality and Tourism.
· Hospitality and Tourism: This course introduces students to the world of culinary arts and global cuisine. Students learn to prepare dishes from different countries, honing their culinary skills while developing an appreciation for cultural diversity. This course also offers the option to participate in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program, allowing students to gain industry certifications and practical experience in the hospitality sector.
Throughout all levels, the department emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking, and innovation. Students have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, collaborate with peers, and prepare for post-secondary education or careers in technology-related fields. With a curriculum designed to foster creativity, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills, the Department of Computer Science and Technology provides students with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-changing digital world.
